Vision/Mission Statement

The mission of Sheldon High School is to empower students to meet standards of excellence that foster intellectual curiosity and ready them to be responsible, productive, employable citizens in a culturally diverse society.

Elk Grove Unified School District will provide a learning community that challenges ALL students to realize their greatest potential.

College Preparatory English 9, which incorporates reading, writing, speaking, listening, and higher-order thinking skills, reflect the integrated language arts approach.  Instruction will include reference skills, study and test-taking skills, writing, reading comprehension, language mechanics and usage, and vocabulary development in meaningful contexts.  This class will study various literary genres including the short story, novel, drama, poetry, essay, and various informational texts in the context thematic units.  Writing instruction will include a variety of modes and will focus on writing as a process.  The course meets UC and CSU English requirements.

Students will be expected to complete a minimum of 1000 pages of outside reading (reading beyond class assignments) of teacher-approved literature.

COURSE PRACTICES AND EXPECTATIONS

At-Home Reference Materials:

All students should have access to a college-level dictionary and a thesaurus.

Homework:

The four-period school day means that a student should expect an increased workload in each class.  However, the workload is offset by fewer classes each day.  High school students should expect to average between 45-60 minutes of daily homework in English in addition to their outside reading requirement.

Tardy Policy:

All tardies will result in discipline per the Sheldon Tardy Policy.  Parents wishing to excuse their student’s tardy for a medical or dental reason must provide written proof to the Attendance Office from the doctor of the appointment which includes doctor’s name, date, time, and doctor’s phone number. All other tardies are unexcused. A detention will be assigned for the third tardy and Saturday School for the fourth.

Plagiarism:

  • Plagiarism is when a student copies someone else’s words or ideas without giving credit to the original author/speaker.  If a student plagiarizes a homework assignment, an essay, or a formal research paper, the student will receive a zero on the assignment and also consequences from the administration (see student handbook).

Texts:

  • Holt Literature and Language Arts, Third Course (textbook for course)
  • Holt Interactive Reading, Third Course (workbook that corresponds with course textbook)
  • A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry (play)
  • Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare (play included in textbook)
  • Sheldon’s Reading and Writing Resource Handbook (bring receipt of purchase and teacher will distribute one to you)

Neither teachers nor the English department assume any financial responsibility for books left behind in the classroom.

SHELDON TEXTBOOK POLICY:  Please be advised that students are financially responsible for all textbooks and library books they check out from the library. This means that students must pay for all books that are lost or stolen from their possession. Students keep textbooks in their classrooms at their own risk. Many times a student gets a textbook mixed up with another classmate. When this happens, the student is still responsible for the book he/she checked out. If a student needs to pay for a book, payment plans can be arranged with the library. Call 681-7500 ext. 8088 if you have questions regarding the textbook policy.
